Mary E. Wolfe (nee Andrews) of Fort Washington, formerly of Elkins Park, passed away peacefully at her summer home in Sea Isle City, New Jersey on Saturday, September 19, 2020. She was 88.

She was born on October 31,1931 to Harry Andrews (Hercules Andreadakis) and Clara Romanias in Grafton, West Virginia. Mary was one of 6 children. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim in November of 2007. She was the loving mother of three children; J. Matthew Wolfe (Denise) of Philadelphia; Mary Elizabeth Wall (Brian) of Fort Washington, and John Wolfe (Allison) of Philadelphia. She was a proud grandmother to 9 and a caring aunt to many. Also preceding her in death was her sister, Athena (Bo). She is survived by two brothers and two sisters

She graduated from Grafton High School and from Fairmount State University where she received her teaching degree. She met the love of her life, Jim Wolfe, in her early high school years and they dated for off and on for many years until the two finally wed in 1952, shortly before Jim left for the Army base. She finished her degree following the wedding and then joined her husband after graduation, teaching in both Texas and Georgia while he achieved the rank of First Lieutenant. They remained married for 55 years until his death in 2007.

Following his discharge from the Army, Mary and Jim moved to Pittsburgh and they had two children. The family moved to follow Jim’s career, first to Dayton OH, then to Chicago and eventually settling in Elkins Park in 1962. A third son joined the family in 1963. The family attended St. James parish school and Mary was an active member of the parish while they grew, even converting from her Christian background to Catholicism during this time.

As the children grew older, Mary returned to teaching and secured many long-term substitute positions throughout Cheltenham Township. Beginning with the 1982-83 school year, Mary was offered a position at Myers Elementary School in Elkins Park to begin the township’s first full day kindergarten program. She later secured a Master’s Degree in Education and continued teaching full day kindergarten until she retired from teaching.

She especially enjoyed spending her summers with her husband and dog at her home in Sea Isle City, NJ. She was joined there every summer by her siblings and their families. Her children likewise grew up with a love of the sea and sand. In her later years, Mary’s grandchildren also joined her at the shore house. It truly was always her happy place.

Mary reluctantly left her home in Elkins Park and moved to Fort Washington Estates, a continuing care community in 2014. She met many lovely friends and she lived there happily from October through May with her devoted and protective companion, Doxie, a mini- longhaired dachshund. Every Memorial Day, however, Mary was always packed and ready for the beach, always looking forward to her homegrown tomatoes, Jersey corn and many lobster dinners.

Relatives and friends were invited to Mary’s funeral Mass which was held at St. Alphonsus Church, 1565 Temple Drive, Maple Glen, PA 19002 on Tuesday, September 29th at 11 AM. There was a viewing prior to the service at 10 AM. Interment followed at Whitemarsh Memorial Cemetery in Horsham. Masks are required and social distancing will be observed at all times.
