The following obituary was composed by Bernadette’s family.
Bernadette M. Smith, 59, of Toms River, NJ (formerly of Bayonne, NJ) passed away peacefully on August 24, 2022, after a lengthy illness.
She was predeceased by her beloved parents, Robert C., and Marian R. (Rinaldi) Smith. She is survived by her brother, Robert F. Smith, his wife Beth, and their children; Matthew, Emily, and Michael, as well as cousins; Carmela Karnoutsos and Charles Gumm, Michael and Mary Ascolese, Betty Ann Ticer, Manny Campos, and others; as well as her best friend of over 30 years, Valerie Antonik.
Bernadette graduated from Our Lady Star of the Sea elementary school and Holy Family Academy HS in Bayonne, NJ and New Jersey City University in Jersey City, NJ. She worked for many years in nonprofit development at Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, NJ and St. Barnabas Medical Center Foundation in Livingston, NJ, prior to retiring to become a fulltime caregiver.
Bernadette was keenly interested in her family’s ancestry and researched and collected photos and documents that helped her, and family members, appreciate their history. She saw beauty in all things vintage and her treasured collections reflected that.
Bernadette’s family is eternally grateful to the many nurses, doctors, technicians, and other medical professionals who cared for her over the past few years, through a pandemic, including the wonderful staff at Chandler Hall in Newtown, PA.
Bernadette asked that those who cared about her donate to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer Association and that everyone be kind to each other.
